In the New Year we will begin as a congregation looking at the New City Catechism, helping to deepen our knowledge and understanding of God and his word.

A catechism is a teaching tool consisting of sets of questions and answers, they’ve been used by the church pretty much since its beginning . Those of you who grew up in Reformed Scottish church traditions may well be familiar with the Westminster Shorter Catechism, for example.

We have decided to use the New City Catechism, produced by the Gospel Coalition and Redeemer Presbyterian church, which is based on classic, historical, Reformed Catechisms, using modern language where possible. It is also 52 questions long, which means we will be looking at one a week throughout the year.

Each child in the congregation will be given a copy of The New City Catechism for Kids and we will include the question of the week in the notices.

We’d like to encourage folk to take the time to look at the questions and answers each week, preferably as a family, and try to memorise them.

There are a number of resources available to help with this including a fuller book and a devotional guide. These can be purchased from a number of different places. There is also a free app for smart devices.
